The Shoalhaven River is one of the most important subjects in Arthur Boyd's remarkable body of work. The Boyds purchased the first of two properties, Riversdale in 1973 and the second, Bundanon in 1979.

Many artists of earlier generations have visited and painted in the Shoalhaven, including Conrad Martens, Elliot Gruner and Roy de Maistre, but it is Arthur Boyd’s depictions of this great winding river with it’s 'ever present unpredictable force' that have become iconic.

Sandra McGrath explains that 'Arthur Boyd’s Shoalhaven pictures give us a new depth of understanding of landscape, a new set of forms and vistas to look upon. Each work is tied to a specific place that has been watched and observed for hour after hour before it becomes absorbed and relived in paint.'

Arthur Boyd is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, all state galleries, many regional galleries and many other important public collections both in Australia and overseas.
