Provenance: Private collection, London since c. 1980

Arthur Boyd is represented in the National Gallery of Australia, all state galleries, and many regional galleries as well as many other public collections throughout Australia and overseas.

Wimmera Landscape, c.1975 is an exceptional painting of one of Boyd’s most important landscape series: the Wimmera region of Western Victoria.

Boyd first painted this series in 1948 and the paintings were exhibited at the David Jones Gallery, Sydney in 1950. The brilliant light and ‘high-pitched heat’ of the Wimmera would see him return to the subject throughout his career. The beauty and ‘underlying menace’ of this landscape are captured by Boyd in delicate tempera and oil which highlights the blanched, sun-parched soil of the area.

Arthur Boyd’s Wimmera paintings are represented in the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Midday the Wimmera, 1949) and the National Gallery of Victoria (Irrigation Lake, Wimmera, 1950).
