David Boyd moved to London in the mid 1960s and in 1966 discovered a method of painting using candle flame. He named the technique Sfumato, a word used by Leonardo da Vinci to describe graduations of misty tone in his painting. In 1967 the Sfumato paintings were exhibited in London. London hippies is likely to have been exhibited at this time.
