Donald Friend stayed at Casa Antica in Testaccio, Italy from 2nd - 24 February 1950 with Jeffrey Smart
and Attilio Guarracino whom friend had met in Ishcia earlier in the year. Other Australian painters such as
Margaret Cilento visited them and Friend made a number of exquisite drawings of the neighbourhood. Including
this ink and wash of a carrozza driver by the name of Giuseppe.

On the 13th of February Friend wrote of the time spent there: "Somehow drawings are piling up. There are quite a few presntable ones of Testaccio now in my folio–God knows how or when they got done–in half hours here and then in the day light."
