The exhibition traverses more than six decades of Joyce’s artistic career in which she painted in Sydney, Melbourne and abroad. It is a collection of personal moments distilled onto paper which shows the artist’s developments and variations through a lifetime of painting, but always there is a sense of the artist remaining true to herself. Each work is a celebration of a full and wonderful life.
The exhibition includes very personal early still-lifes such as Joe's Pipe on Our Only Ashtray, 1956. Executed in beautiful patterns of fabric and fruit, the painting is a lasting memory of Joyce’s late husband. West McDonald Ranges c.1984 was painted following her husband’s death and a journey to Central Australia, which for years she had so longed to visit. Joyce captures the majesty and power of the landscape, in hot glowing reds. Blue Swimmer Crabs (Before) and (After) c.1987 are two humorous culinary observations of the after-effect of boiling. Also included are recent works of great beauty, such as the poignant The Sea in Winter 2007 in which an arrangement of bright hibiscus warms the windowsill of the artist’s former beachside home.
