Graduating with a degree in Architecture from the University of New South Wales, Giacco studied painting under David Wilson at the Julian Ashton Art School, and continued private study with fellow artist Brian Dunlop. Between 1980 and 1983 he studied at the University of Art and Architecture in Vienna, later travelling throughout Europe and America. Giacco has received a number of portrait commissions for people such as John Laws and Professor Druttman, the first female Judge in Israel. He works pictorially, capturing the character of his sitters through the objects and images that surround them. Giacco’s oeuvre extends to allegorical works, intimate figure studies, and landscapes. His concern for light and composition has led him to create works marked by luminosity and spatial harmony, expressing the beauty of his subjects through images that are both classical and modern in their approach. Giacco was awarded the Archibald Prize in 1995, the Mosman Art Prize in 1996, and was the People’s Choice of the Salon des Refuse in 1997. Giacco’s work is represented in regional gallery collections, Artbank, tertiary and private collections.
