George Baldessin was an important Australian artist and very influential in the Melbourne art world until his premature death in 1978. Baldessin was known for his sculptures and expert printmaking of which Mirror 1967 is a fine example. In 1966 Baldessin was awarded the Alcorso-Sekers Travelling Scholarship Award for Sculpture, which allowed him to travel to Japan, a country which had a lasting influence on his work.
