Eva Breuer Art Dealer will acknowledge its close association with artists and teachers of the Julian Ashton Art School.
Perhaps no other art school has had a greater influence on the shaping of art in Australia than The Julian Ashton Art School. Founded in 1890, the Sydney Art School (as it was first known) has not waivered in its commitment to atelier based teaching of drawing and painting.
A who’s who of Australian artists associated with the school either as teachers or students include John Passmore, William Dobell, George Lambert, Dorrit Black, Jean Bellette, Thea Proctor, Roy De Maistre, Salvatore Zofrea, Adrian Feint, Elioth Gruner, Syd Long and JJ Hilder. Among the artists attending in later decades were John Olsen, Michael Johnston, Brett Whiteley.
The focus has been and remains to this day that; “art alone is the language of art”. In recent times artists such as the late Brian Dunlop, Ross Harvey and Francis Giacco as well as a younger generation of painters including Sophie Dunlop, Sam Wade, Andrew Paviour and James Stephenson have continued this tradition.
The school is now under the directorship of Julian Ashton's great grandson, Paul Delprat and became the Julian Ashton Art School in 1988 and has been at its present location at The Rocks in Sydney since 1933.
