Coburn’s affinity with the colours and landscape of central and indigenous Australia are evident in this work. Coburn found a connectedness with indigenous art not only in its simplicity but also its spirituality. Lou Klepac, in his book The Spirit of Colour explains, ‘the texture of the paintings of this period made these the richest and most complex of all his works, giving them a physical presence and authority.’ Klepac L, John Coburn: The Spirit of Colour, Beagle Press Roseville, 2003, p. 85.
