Signed 'Coburn' lower right

The painting was exhibited at Barry Stern Galleries c.1987 and acquired by a private collection in New Zealand. It’s a sublime painting which compliments Dark Descent, 1966 ( Newcastle Regional Art Gallery, illustrated in Nadine Amadio’s, John Coburn Paintings 1950-1988, Craftsman House, 1988, p.59.) As Amadio explains in relation to Dark Descent, and equally her words apply to Nocturne, it is “ a deceptively simple and highly charged statement made in compelling colours that confirms Coburn’s mastery of form.”
