Biography

1870 Born in Creswick, Victoria, the eldest of 10 children. Encouraged to draw by his grandfather, Reverend Thomas Wilkins. Attended weekly painting classes in Ballarat under English artist Frederick Sheldon
1890s Conducted his own outdoor painting classes
1893 Attended outdoor painting classes with Walter Withers and English watercolourist Miller Marshall. Paints subjects of men mining and girls in the landscape. Received portrait commissions
1895 Moved to Melbourne after brother Lionel. Attended the National Gallery School briefly, then returned to Creswick
1897 Returned to Melbourne, working as a black and white illustrator. Member of the Victorian Artists' Society
1904-08 Elected to the Council of the Victorian Artists' Society
1906 Married Jessie Hammon, lived in Glenferrie. Painted around the Heidelberg district
1918 Moved to Sydney, living in Roseville then Milson's Point. Painted the Harbour and industry in Sydney
1920s-30s Experimented with printmaking under Norman Lindsay's guidance at Springwood
1952 Died in Sydney
