Whereas Balson's earlier constructive paintings were akin to Mondrian, his later work was more attuned to Jackson Pollock and the New York School as well as the European Tachists. As Bruce Adams writes in his later work Balson  “explored textural effects and the automatic techniques of pouring and  trailing his paint."
