Born in Melbourne to Australian/ Swedish parents Borlase often bases her works on her childhood memories, story telling and issues regarding displacement while at the same time conveying a sense of post war chic, B-grade movie kitsch and science-fiction and story book illustration. It is this friction between the multiple layers or the isolation of imagery in Borlase’s images that creates a mysterious sense of tension, humour and intrigue. Borlase is the director and the canvas is her stage, each picture may be read as an allegory or fragments of a scene and often makes reference to the relationship between the artist in her studio and the outside world. Her collaged images give a cinematic feel, providing a cast, set and narrative for the viewers’ interpretation. The viewer is welcomed and encouraged to entwine their personal references with Borlase’s own. |
