Lina Bryans (1909-2000)

Biography

1909 Born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1909.
1910 Bryans arrived in Australia as an infant and was raised in Victoria, England and France.
1936 Bryans moved to South Yarra, Victoria and painted her first works in 1937.
1940s lived in a converted hotel at Darebin which developed into an informal artists colony. William Frater and Ian fair-weather has studios there.
1948 studied in Melbourne under George Bell.
1951 studied with William Frater and Mary Cockburn (1951).
1953 studied in Paris at L’Ecole Libre in La Grand Chaumiere.
Member of the Independent Group and the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors.

Has exhibited mainly in group and important survey shows, including:
1938 The Herald exhibition of Outstanding Pictures of 1937
1941 Art of Australia 1788-1941, shown at MOMA, New York
1948 First solo exhibition
