Roy de Maistre (1894-1968)
Biography
1894 Born in Maryvale, Bowral
1913 Moved to Sydney; Studied at the Royal Art Society, under Dattilio Rubbo; Studied at the Julian Ashton Art School
1916 Served in the First Australian Imperial Force; worked as a medical orderly, Australian Army Medical Corps
1917 Met Dr Charles Gordon Moffit, Kenmore Hospital Goulburn, with whom he was to work devising a 'colour treatment' for shell-shocked soldiers
1919 Worked with Adrian Verbrugghen and then Roland Wakelin to devise a 'colour/music' theory
1922 First painting purchased by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, ‘Still Life’
1923-25 Travelled to Europe on Society of Artists Travelling Scholarship; visited England, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Holland
1924 Patented the 'De Maistre Colour Harmonising Chart', produced and marketed by Grace Bros, Sydney
1926-30 Taught painting to private pupils
1928-29 Worked with Harold Cazneaux to produce a series of 'new idea portraits'; 'Fair Women and Modern Design' for Home magazine
1930 Left Australia to live permanently in England
1931-32 Visits to Villa Arrantegra, St Jean de Luz
1932-34 Visits to Compiegne
1936 Met Patrick White
1940 Started work for the French Section, Joint War Organization of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St John, London
1942 Posted to Foreign Relations Department, Red Cross
1947 Painting 'Figure in a Garden (The Aunt)' used as the cover for the first edition of Patrick White's 'The Aunt's Story'
1951 Confirmed in Roman Catholic faith
1954 Became a member of the London Group
1954 Commenced painting 'Stations of the Cross' for Westminster Cathedral
1968 Died in London
