Lloyd Rees (1895-1988)

Biography

1895 Born in Brisbane, Queensland
1910 Awarded a scholarship to the Central Technical College, Brisbane,
where he experienced his first formal art education
1911 Worked as a clerk with the Union Bank of Australia
1912 Enrolled as a special constable during the General Strike in Brisbane
1912 Diagnosed with Bright's Disease
1913 Worked as a junior artist in the Government Printing Office
1915 Enrolled full time at the Technical College Art School, experimenting with
watercolour and oils
1917 Joined the Smith & Julius Studio in Sydney as a commercial artist at the
request of Sydney Ure Smith.
1917 Lived in Woollahra
1917 Art Gallery of NSW bought three of Rees' drawings from a Society of Artists Exhibition
1919 Met and was influenced by Max Meldrum
1923 Lived in London, with visits to Paris and Rome
1924 Returned to Australia
1925 National Gallery of Victoria purchased two paintings from the New Gallery
exhibition, Melbourne
1926 Married Dulcie Metcalfe, who died the following year in childbirth
1931 Married Marjory Pollard
1931 Began exhibiting with Macquarie Galleries
1932 Elected a member of the Society of Artists
1939 Began to spend holidays in Gerringong on the South Coast of NSW
1939 Began to paint landscapes
1942-46 Taught drawing at the Sydney Technical College
1942 Joined the Northwood Group
1946 Appointed tutor in Drawing, and lecturer in the History of Art, School of
Architecture, University of Sydney, where he lectured until 1986
1949 Appointed Sydney representative of the Felton Bequest and Queensland Art Gallery
1950 Honorary Secretary of the Society of Artists
1953 Travelled in Italy, France, Spain and Britain
1954 Judged the Mosman Art Prize
1959 Visited Europe – Italy, France, Denmark, Britain, Greece
1961-65 Elected President of the Society of Artists
1962-67 Appointed to the Sydney City Council's Fountains Committee
1962 Elected Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, University of Sydney
1963-69 Chairman of the Lane Cove Council's Art Panel
1964-69 Member of the National Advisory Committee for UNESCO, and Chairman of the Visual Arts Committee (Australia) for UNESCO
1965 Visited the Flinders Ranges
1966 Began to draw and paint the Sydney Opera House
1966-67 Travels in Europe – Italy, Greece, France, Britain, Portugal, Spain, Majorca.
1968 Upon return to Australia from his European travels he visited Tasmania.
1973 Travelled to London with the opening of first solo exhibition at the New Grafton Gallery
1974 Travelled in France and Italy
1976 Began to experiment with soft-ground etchings
1976 Visited Central Australia
1984 Rees' eyes troubled him, suffering cataracts and macular degeneration
1986 Moved to Tasmania to be with his family
1986 Gave his final lectures at the University of Sydney
1987 Visit to Paris for an exhibition of his work at Printemps Haussman
1988 Died in Hobart
