Roy de Maistre

Roy de Maistre
(1894-1968)

One of the leading exponents of early Modernism in Australia, Roy de Maistre vigorously investigated the concept of colour harmony. For de Maistre, colours in a painting combine like musical notes to create a "symphony".
He subsequently travelled and exhibited in Europe, including England and France, where his friends included Patrick White and Francis Bacon. His paintings, like those of his Australian contemporaries Roland Wakelin and Grace Cossington Smith, reveal the influence of cubism. These "colour-music" painters are eagerly sought by collectors of fine modernist work.
Represented in the National Gallery of Australia, all state galleries,
many regional galleries and the Tate Gallery London.
