After a sell-out inaugural exhibition, Sam's career is going from strength to strength as today, 21 September, he was awarded the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship.
Mrs Beryl Whiteley, the late artist's mother, has made the funds available for the scholarship both to encourage excellence
in painting and to offer young artists the same opportunities to develop their careers as were afforded to her son.
Judged by Edmund Capon, Barry Pearce and Garry Shead, the Scholarship consists of a prize of $25,000 and a three month residency at the Studio at the Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris administered by AGNSW.

John Coburn Tapestry
|

John Coburn
Aubusson Tapestry 1/3
High-warp wool tapestry
188 x 173cm
|
|
A John Coburn tapestry from a private collection in the USA has recently arrived in the gallery. Based on a painting of the same title, In Praise of the Sun was designed in 1966 and finished the following year. It was produced with the financial support of Kim Bonython and exhibited in his Hungry Horse Gallery later that year. Coburn's first foray into tapestry was sparked by the Sydney visit of Lucien Dray - the agent for the French tapestry workshop Aubusson. The workshop wove with Australian wool, and Dray met Coburn while looking for an Australian artist to design some tapestries. In Praise of the Sun and two other Coburn tapestries toured to most Australian state galleries in 1968. In Praise of the Sun 2/3 is in the collection of the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
