BIOGRAPHY
Born in Sydenham, London in 1893. Died 1977. His experiences as a soldier during WWI that resulted in an arm injury greatly influenced his art, as did travels throughout Europe, and to North Africa, Tahiti and New Zealand. Hawkins settled in Australia in 1935. He developed a significant public profile in the Sydney art world from the 1940s, and continued to exhibit in solo and group shows during his lifetime.
EXHIBITIONS
Participated in over 250 solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia, including a tribute exhibition of his work organised by the Art Gallery of NSW, 1977-79. Regularly exhibited in the Archibald, Blake, Wynne and Sulman Prizes, and was involved in the New South Wales branch of the Contemporary Art Society.
