Australian Abstract

Eva Breuer Art Dealer is pleased to announce the opening of Australian Abstract, an exhibition of important Australian non-figurative paintings on view from Thursday May 29 until June 26. Highlighting works by Australia’s abstract masters and spanning four decades, the exhibition includes major museum quality works by John Coburn, Roger Kemp and Richard Larter as well as Fred Williams, Stanislaus Rapotec, Elwyn Lynn, Ken Whisson, David Aspen, Aboriginal artists and new acquisitions by Dick Watkins and Alun Leach-Jones.

John Coburn’s large scale desert painting Alderbaran III 1980, a homage to the star of the same name, is an important work related to Alderbaran 1977 illustrated in Nadine Amadio’s John Coburn: Paintings, published by Craftsman House in 1988. One of a number of the gallery's collection of the late artist's work, Coburn’s firey vermilion composition is complimented by the jubilant emerald green of Rapotec’s Spring 1979 and the geometric, staccato rhythm of Roger Kemp's rare 60's work Untitled 1963.

New works in the gallery, such as Dick Watkin’s Ulysses 1989 and Alun Leach- Jones’ series Instruments for a Solitary Navigation (no’s 9,10,11) are superb examples of the vitality of late twentieth century abstraction. Watkins, (honoured with a National Gallery of Australia retrospective in 1993) is in this late 80s period, a physical, gestural painter and owes much to de Kooning and abstract expressionism. Leach-Jones Instruments are harder edged explosions of various forms and planes of colour. Assorted and distorted objects collide within these dense spaces like beautifully entwined elements of a Fernand Leger.
