Tony Irving Eva Breuer Art Dealer is pleased to announce the opening of Tony Irving’s Who knows where or why 2008. Tony Irving’s vision is entirely contemporary; his sharp eye capturing unexpected moments, the play of light on everyday scenes, creating often richly detailed tableaux of life. There is often a sense of whimsy but there is always more – an underlying narrative that gives the works a depth that goes well beyond the immediate impression. Irving has a classicist’s love of technique; meticulously layering colour, subtly glazing, with an understanding of balance and composition that brings a harmony to his works. In Who knows where, or why, Irving interprets the urban world both near and far, from Morocco and Europe to his own inner-urban environment. In Hello Sailor, a workman wrestles with plastic piping against an aged wall, completely absorbed in his task, but the peeling poster of a pin-up girl from another era watches all. In All is Revealed, an eager, even anxious group cluster in a Moroccan alley, with all the trappings of Western tourists. They huddle and stare, to observe – who knows what? But we, the viewers observe the observers. In Watching the Cleaners, Irving brings to life the façade of Paris’s famed Notre Dame, with its medieval statuary but brings it dramatically into the modern world with its sci-fi clad cleaners, clambering over a network of scaffolding. It’s an arresting work that is typical of the artist’s ability to convey his unique vision. Exhibition: Tony Irving – Who knows where or why 2008 Eva Breuer Art Dealer
