MEDIA RELEASE

Elisabeth Kruger
New Paintings 2005
Opening Saturday 26 November 3-5pm

In her fifth solo exhibition at Eva Breuer Art Dealer, the Moet & Chandon award-winning artist, Elisabeth Kruger, again draws us into the botanical world. Using the garden as a metaphor for the stages of human growth and experience, Kruger's paintings are contemporary readings of the traditional still life genre.

Kruger's delicate flowers tell a tale of femininity and the blush of youth. Larger than life, they take on human characteristics as they Glimpse, Glance, Blush and Reflect. The rosy buds and full blooms emerge in clusters from behind the lush foliage, like coy young girls with pink cheeks and ruffled dresses. Rouge is a portrait of a tall poppy amongst unopened buds, a scarlet figure that has blossomed before her time.

Kruger's paintings have a cinematic quality, with details of flowers painstakingly enlarged and cropped to create dramatic images. These are stunning floral masterpieces with a contemporary edge.

Kruger was awarded the prestigious Moet & Chandon Art Fellowship (1989) and an overseas studio residency with the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council (1990). Her work is represented in the Australian National Gallery, National Gallery of Victoria, Parliament House Collection, Artbank, University of Canberra, Macquarie University, ANZ Bank and Wesfarmers.
