Mirka Mora (b.1928)
Mirka Mora is one of Melbourne's
best known and loved artists who arrived in Australia from Paris
in 1951, accompanied by her husband, Georges, and baby Philippe. The Mora's soon became influential in Melbourne's bohemian society
of the time and their restaurants, The Mirka Cafe, the Balzac and
the Tolarno became the focal points for the artistic life of the
city.
Over the last fifty years, Mirka Mora's creative energy has produced
a prolific output of work. She uses many techniques; drawing, painting,
embroidery, mosaics, doll-making and soft sculpture. In 1998, the Lord Mayor and councillors of the City of Melbourne
awarded her the title of Honoured Artist 'in recognition of lifelong
achievement in the arts which has made an outstanding contribution
to the life of this city'.
