Lloyd Rees

Lloyd Rees (1895 - 1988)

Lloyd Rees was one of Australia's most competent and widely respected landscape painters. Preoccupied with depicting the effects of light, his works convey a serenity of the Australian landscape as he sought to express an ideal of harmony between man and nature. Whilst finding inspiration in quite pastoral surroundings, Rees’ canvases have always shown the influence of European traditions, particularly those of Italy and France, which he visited a number of times throughout his long career. He has demonstrated a mastery of painting in oils and watercolour, pencil, pen and ink, charcoal drawing and printmaking, and has been twice winner of the Wynne Prize from the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Rees has been the recipient of a number of accolades, including the prestigious award of Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in 1985. His work is represented in the Australian National Gallery, Canberra; all State and many regional galleries; the Holmes a Court collection; and many private and university collection both in Australia and overseas.
