Jeffrey Smart (b. 1921)

Biography

1921             Born in Adelaide, South Australia
1938-44        Studied at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts,
                    and Adelaide Teachers College
1941             Joined the Royal South Australian Society of Arts
1942             Joined the Contemporary Art Society of South Australia
1945             Part-time teacher at the Adelaide Teachers College and School of Arts
1948-50        Studied in Europe, including a period in Paris under Fernand Leger
1951             Moved to Sydney
1952-54        Worked as Art Critic for the Daily Telegraph
1959             Teacher of life drawing, East Sydney Technical College
1963             Left Australia to live permanently in Italy.
                    Travels widely throughout Europe, USA, Asia and Africa.
                    Has continued to exhibit regularly in Australia.
